Key points

Purpose:
Secondary glazing is primarily used to enhance the thermal and acoustic insulation of windows. It provides an extra barrier between the interior and exterior of a building, reducing heat loss and minimising external noise.

Installation:
Our secondary glazing units can be fixed through the face of the frame onto the existing window frame, using either our equal leg or odd leg profile, or fixed through the side of the frame into the reveal, using the equal leg frame only.

Where the existing windows are out of square or shaped a wooden sub-frame can be used. All systems can incorporate different glass options for increased thermal insulation, sound proofing as well as security.

LEARN MORE ABOUT SECONDARY GLAZING

In situations where double, or triple glazing is not possible for your windows, secondary glazing is a desirable option. It offers a range of
benefits for properties that need sufficient window improvements and cannot have double glazing installed. It’s important to note that
while secondary glazing is a great alternative, it may not be as effective as double glazing in providing sufficient insulation.

Benefits
  • Thermal insulation: Secondary glazing improves the energy efficiency of windows by reducing heat transfer. It helps retain heat during winter and prevents excessive heat gain in summer, leading to energy savings and increased comfort.

  • Noise reduction: The extra layer of glazing helps block external noise, making it particularly useful for homes or buildings located in noisy areas such as near busy roads or airports.

  • Improved security: Secondary glazing adds an additional layer of protection to windows, making them more resistant to break-ins and burglaries.

  • Condensation control: It can help reduce condensation on windows by creating a warmer surface and preventing cold spots.

Compatibility

Secondary glazing is compatible with most types of windows, including sash windows, casement windows, and even curved or shaped windows.

  • Aesthetics: The added layer of glazing may slightly affect the appearance of windows from the inside. However, modern secondary glazing systems are designed to be discreet and blend with the existing window frames.

  • Maintenance: Secondary glazing is relatively low maintenance. The panels can be easily removed for cleaning and maintenance of the primary window.

  • Cost: Secondary glazing is generally more cost-effective than full window replacement. The exact cost depends on factors such as the size of the windows, the type of glazing, and the complexity of the installation.
